Waste treatment plant in Belarus' Lida District to be commissioned by 2025

30.06.2020

A waste treatment plant in Lida District will be put into operation by 2025, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.

“There are 376 sites with containers for separate collection of paper, plastic, and glass in Lida District and the city of Lida. Twenty-eight stationary and six mobile waste reception centers for collection of secondary raw materials operate in the region. The solid municipal waste landfill by the village of Khoruzhevtsy features a waste sorting line with the capacity of 5,000 tonnes a year. Plans are in place to commission a waste recycling plant with the capacity of around 100,000 tonnes a year there by 2025,” the ministry noted.

The waste management system in Lida District helped increase the recovery rate of secondary raw materials from slightly over 15.5% in 2015 to 26% in 2019. In January-May 2020, this rate stood at almost 28%. “The head of state gave the instruction to address the problem of waste collection and recycling in the next 2-3 years and bring the rate of secondary raw materials extracted from solid municipal waste up to 50%,” the ministry said.

Belarus is implementing the subprogram “Municipal Waste Management and Use of Secondary Raw Materials” that is part of the state program “Comfortable Housing and Favorable Environment” for 2016-2020.
