“This document represents blatant interference in the domestic affairs of Belarus on the part of the Lithuanian MPs. It is also sheer disregard for the sovereign right of Belarusian people to choose their leadership and the country's development path on their own. The attempt of the Lithuanian MPs to appoint “the leader elected by Belarusian people” defies common sense. Such actions are provocative and unacceptable, they run afoul of the principles of international law and interstate communication between parliamentarians,” the statement reads.
The Belarusian MPs condemn calls to put pressure on the Belarusian government by means of sanctions in order to change the domestic and foreign policy of the country. “We are convinced that the relations between Belarus and Lithuania cannot be fruitful unless there are mutual respect, constructive and comprehensive cooperation, including interparliamentary contacts, and non-interference in domestic affairs,” the statement reads.
