Scientists of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan have set up an International Eurasian Society for Infectious Diseases. The decision was taken at the foundation conference, BelTA learnt from Yuri Lobzin, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. He was elected President of the new organisation.
The society will focus on assisting the coordination of efforts of national and regional organisations, which participate in fighting infectious diseases, formation of the public opinion about topical issues relating to infection pathologies, assistance to supporting the high scientific and technological level of researches into infectious diseases, their prevention, diagnostics and treatment. Among other things the society will be dedicated to perfecting the pathogenetic area in studies and treatment of infectious diseases as well as assistance with training specialists for research in infectious diseases.
The society is supposed to be headquartered in Saint Petersburg. The working committee of the society includes leading scientists of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Lithuania, Poland, Denmark, and Germany.
The foundation conference took place at the International Eurasian Congress for Infectious Diseases, which ended in Vitebsk on June 6. The congress gathered leading infectiologists from the CIS states, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Denmark and the USA. During the congress discussions touched upon prevention and treatment of HIV infections, chronic hepatitis, enterovirus and intestinal infection diseases, rabies, bird flu. Over 100 reports were delivered. Over 400 scientific papers by almost 900 authors were published.
