UNICEF, IT company to earmark $100,000 each to help Belarus fight COVID-19

16.04.2020

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the international provider of IT solutions and services Itransition will earmark $100,000 each to help Belarus fight COVID-19.

The parties have signed a corresponding memorandum of cooperation, BelTA learned from the UNICEF Office in Belarus.

The joint project aims to support vulnerable groups: children, teenagers and their families. The plan has been developed in view of the epidemiological situation in Belarus and following an application from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the UN office and other international organizations in Geneva.

The project will focus on two areas. The first one is to purchase necessary protective gear. The second one is to support continuous education for children and teenagers. These efforts will enhance to the measures already undertaken by the Belarusian government, the UNICEF Office in Belarus stressed.

The big IT company has joined the initiative to help make necessary purchases. The technical expertise of the company will help introduce distance learning tools. This is an opportunity to address two tasks, which are to provide assistance to those who need it and to support measures to stem the spread of the epidemic.

“Corporate social responsibility of business is all the more significant amid the humanitarian crisis,” UNICEF representative to Belarus Rashed Mustafa Sarwar noted. “Other companies should also demonstrate their social responsibility,” he added.

The cooperation between UNICEF and Itransition is a great example of interaction between residents of the Hi-Tech Park and international organizations for the benefit of Belarus, Director of the Hi-Tech Park Vsevolod Yanchevsky said. “Our IT community has been helping the Belarusian healthcare system since the first days. Dozens of resident companies of the park – from large to small companies – have already provided financial assistance to Belarusian doctors and hospitals. More companies get involved in this activity literally every day,” Vsevolod Yanchevsky added.
