Belarus, Finland discuss rescue operations in high-rise buildings

The University of Civil Protection of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry played host to a seminar within the framework of the twinning project “Strengthening the Emergencies Ministry of the Republic of Belarus”, BelTA learned from the press service of the ministry.

During the seminar, head of the department for rescue and emergency services and response to emergencies of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry Sergei Novik and representative of Helsinki City Rescue Department Kimmo Tuominen discussed evacuation and firefighting operations in high-rise buildings and compared Belarusian and Finnish approaches to these operations. Jari Marttila, an expert with Helsinki City Rescue Department, briefed the participants of the seminar via videoconferencing about education and training at the Emergency Services Academy Finland.

The participants of the event also discussed ways to upgrade training grounds of the Institute for Retraining and Professional Development of the University of Civil Protection. The Finnish party shared its vision of the upgrading and gave recommendations how to improve the effectiveness of the training grounds in training techniques of firefighting operations in residential and industrial buildings as wellas the training facility for first aid to victims of emergencies.

Belarus was represented by specialists of the National Special Purpose Unit, the Emergencies Ministry departments of Minsk Oblast and the city of Minsk, and top officials and teachers of the University of Civil Protection of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry and its Institute for Retraining and Professional Development.

At the end of the seminar, Kimmo Tuominen got familiar with the capacities of University of Civil Protection, its equipment and educational process to train specialists for rescue services of Belarus.
