MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – The Belarusian Railways plans to expand the geography of its international passenger transportation in 2012, BelTA learnt from the company’s press service. Jointly with the railway administrations of Russia and Kazakhstan the Belarusian Railways is scrutinizing the opportunity of opening a new Minsk-Almaty route through Samara and Iletsk. “The service will be opened in line with the summer schedule for passenger transportation in 2012-2013,” the press service said. According to the Belarusian railway company, last year a new year-round train Minsk-Moscow-Arkhangelsk was put into service, the Brest-Baranovichi-Chelyabinsk route was prolonged via Astana to Karaganda. Moscow-Minsk train No 7/8 of the Russian Railways has been prolonged to Brest. Minsk has also resumed rail service to Riga. Gradual implementation of the joint action plan to organize Minsk-Vilnius high-speed service has helped cut travel time – from four to three hours. On the whole, in 2011 the Belarusian railways provided 614 extra trains to cope with the seasonal demands, including 404 trains in the international communications. БЕЛТА
