MINSK, 9 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian and Lithuanian rail operators signed two agreements during Transport & Logistics expo in Minsk, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Railways.
Thus, the parties signed the agreement on cooperation in rail freight transport and the agreement on the transport of empty private, leased cars between Belarus and Lithuania with the use of electronic transport documents (electronic waybill). These agreements will help the two companies strengthen the cooperation, which, in turn, will boost the volumes and competitiveness of rail freight transport, the Belarusian Railways said.
The Lithuanian Railways is the most important partner of the Belarusian rail operator in part of international freight transport. "Lithuania provides Belarus with optimal logistics to deliver export/import cargoes such as potash fertilizers, oil products, ferrous metals," said the press service.
For the past decade the Belarusian Railways has created a number of sustainable transit routes, one of which is towards the ports of Lithuania and Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. Promising is the use of opportunities that open up with the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, which can help attract Kazakhstani cargo flows to ports in Kaliningrad and Klaipeda. To boost cargo flows the Belarusian Railways jointly with the Lithuanian Railways and Lithuanian stevedoring companies have been working hard to optimize the logistics of cargo delivery, to make their competitive, and provide for alternatives on a parity basis.
The Belarusian rail operator has joined efforts with the Lithuanian Railways to improve transcontinental connections between the countries of Scandinavia and Black Sea basin using the 9th international corridor.
