Belarus tops World University Championships in Canoe Sprint medal table

Belarusian athletes produced a remarkable performance to top the medal table of the 6th World University Championships in Canoe Sprint which took place at the National Olympic Rowing Center in Zaslavl, Minsk Oblast with a total of 20 medals (13 gold, 1 silver and 6 bronze), BelTA has learned. On the second day of the competitions Belarusian athletes claimed ten gold medals at the 200m and 500m races: K1 Women 200m – Margarita Tishkevich (43.212); K2 Women 200m – Olga Khudenko/Marina Litvinchuk (40.634); C2 Men 200m – Denis Makhlai/Gleb Solodukha (39.740); K4 Women 200m – Margarita Tishkevich/Marina Litvinchuk/Olga Khudenko/Nadezhda Lepeshko (37.592); C4 Men 200m – Ruslan Sazanovets/Sergei Privolkin/Yuri Mazanovich/Yevgeny Tengel (37.219); K1 Women 500m – Marina Litvinchuk (1:58.261); K2 Women 500m – Sofia Yurchenko/Alexandra Grishina (1:49.501); K2 Men 500m – Pavel Medvedev/Oleg Yurenya (1:34.734); K4 Women 500m – Margarita Tishkevich/Olga Khudenko/Nadezhda Lepeshsko/Marina Litvinchuk (1:44.751); C4 Men 500m – Ruslan Sazanovets/Sergei Privolkin/Yuri Mazanovich/Yevgeny Tengel (1:41.161). Silver went to Pavel Medvedev in K1 Men 500m event. Bronze medals were brought to Belarus by Denis Garazha in C1 Men 200m, Denis Makhlai/Gleb Solodukha in C2 Men 500m, Ivan Tsuranov/Roman Novitsky/Andrei Tsarikovich/Artyom Tilyulo in K4 Men 500m. On the first day of final events (16 August) Belarus clinched three gold and three bronze medals in the 1000m races. The champion title was claimed by Oleg Yurenya in K1 Men 1000m, Maxim Petrov in C1 Men 1000m and the Belarusian C4 team of Ruslan Sazanovets, Sergei Privolkin, Dmitry Pivovar, Yevgeny Tengel. Bronze medals were collected by Pavel Medvedev and Oleg Yurenya in K2 Men 1000m, Andrei Bogdanovich and Denis Makhlai in C2 Men 1000m and the K4 1000m crew of Ivan Tsuranov, Sergei Teleshov, Andrei Tsarikovich, Igor Boichevsky. The organizers of the 6th World University Championships in Canoe Sprint presented special prizes to athletes and teams. Josef Dostal of the Czech Republic was named the best in the men kayak category, Martin Fuksa of the Czech Republic – in the best men canoe category, Marina Litvinchuk of Belarus – in the best women kayak. The Polish team was named the best in the men kayak category. Belarus won the best men canoe and women kayak nominations. According to the organizers of the championships in Zaslavl, among which is the Education Ministry, the Sport and Tourism Ministry, the Minsk City Hall and the Minsk Oblast Executive Committee, the National Center of Physical Education and Sports for Students, the Belarusian Canoe Association, the International University Sports Federation (FISU), Belarusian athletes represented the best national team. At the closing ceremony the FISU competitions flag was handed to Team Mexico that will host the 7th World University Championships in Canoe Sprint. The World University Champiosnhips as well as Summer and Winter Universiades are held biennially under the aegis of the FISU. Belarus has taken part in the world's university canoe sprint forums since 2008.
