Belaruskali-Uralkali alliance could be more effective on the market

17.12.2014

An alliance of the Belarusian potash company Belaruskali and the Russian potash company Uralkali could secure a more effective position on the market. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Alexander Surikov made the relevant statement during the press conference in Minsk on 17 December, BelTA has learned.
“There is no doubt that an alliance would be more successful although one has yet to think what kind of an alliance. The alliance could secure a more effective position on the market with regard to higher prices and sales volume,” said Alexander Surikov.
The Ambassador stressed that he understands concerns of the Belarusian side regarding new integration alliances in the potash industry. “I understand the Belarusian side. They are cautious about future new integration alliances. They would not like a repeat of the situation when both the market and the revenues crashed,” noted the Ambassador.
Speaking about the initial phase of the Belarusian-Russian potassium conflict, Alexander Surikov compared actions of the Russian company to the behavior that was common in the 1990s: make fast money through shares, through speculations on the stock exchange without caring for other considerations. The Ambassador said that the Russian company had taken a beating absolutely objectively. “It is unclear how the situation will end but at least the owners have changed,” said Alexander Surikov.
