Speed limit on second Minsk ring road down to 70kmph this winter

19.10.2015

Сonstruction work is still in progress and the road is being examined Plans have been made to reduce the speed limit on the second Minsk ring road to 70kmph by winter, BelTA learned from representatives of the road construction and maintenance enterprise Minskavtodor-Tsentr. According to the source, construction work is still in progress and the road is being examined. Cool weather is a factor as well as technological peculiarities of concrete-surface roads. It is possible that the speed limit will be reduced from 90kmph to 70kmph, BelTA has been told. The measure is supposed to take care of the safety of motorists. For one year after it is opened, the road cannot be treated with mixtures that contain salt. Since air temperature drops below zero at night, it is dangerous to drive along the road at high speeds. Sand and other mixtures will be used instead of salts to improve traction on the road. Part of the second ring road around Minsk was opened to traffic on 6 October. The section is 27.3km long. Once completed, the new ring road around Minsk will be about 159km long. The construction process is split into two stages. The first one is scheduled for completion by 1 January 2016. A road connecting the M3 motorway Minsk-Vitebsk and the M6/E28 motorway Minsk – Grodno – the Polish border (Bruzgi) will be built by that time. The second stage of the project will last till 7 November 2017. In the second stage a road will be built to connect the M6/E28 motorway Minsk – Grodno – Polish border (Bruzgi) and the M1/E30 motorway Brest (Kozlovichi) – Minsk — the Russian border (Redki). In the future the speed limit of the second Minsk ring road will be set at 120kpmh.
