Farms and agricultural producers of the Smorgon and Oshmyany districts of the Grodno region and the Volozhin district of the Minsk region are moving to European standards in the conduct of organic agriculture, BelTA learned from the UNDP press office in Belarus.
The pilot initiative is implemented within the framework of the large-scale project "Promoting the transition of the Republic of Belarus to a green economy", funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.
Thanks to a set of measures to expand organic farming, the areas occupied by organic agriculture in the target areas increased by 43 hectares. One of the key participants of the initiative was the farm "Vermi Ecoproduct". For the needs of the economy for the EU funds, agricultural equipment was purchased and installed, which allowed the company to expand its production of liquid humic fertilizers for organic farming from 500 to 2000 liters per season. The land and 19 items of products produced by Vermi Ecoproduct have successfully passed the organic certification for compliance with the European Union standards.
The experience of certification according to EU standards was extended to other farms. This helped them to switch to organic farming and achieve an ecological, economic and social effect.
After a series of training sessions with foreign experts on organic farming, three farms - Rodnik-Pro, Agro-Vastara and Amager - are currently testing humic fertilizers produced by the Vermi Ecoproduct farm, Taking the experience of conducting organic farming according to EU standards. The farms are working on reclamation of soils used to conduct traditional agriculture, preparing them for more organic organic farming.
Liquid humic fertilizers are suitable for organic farming, they can be introduced into the soil that has been certified organically and will allow Belarusian farms to replace more expensive imported fertilizers with a local analogue. In the future, the crop is certified as organic agricultural products. In the future, a successful transition to organic farming will allow farmers to create new "green" jobs.
The project "Facilitating the transition of the Republic of Belarus to a green economy" aims to help in shaping economic growth based on "green" principles, including environmentally sustainable and economically viable use of natural resources, promotion of environmentally sustainable production and consumption, creation of green jobs. The project budget is 5 million euros.
