Minsk National Airport celebrates this year's 5-millionth passenger

23.12.2019

Minsk National Airport celebrated the 5-millionth passenger of 2019, a record high number for the Belarusian airport, BelTA has learned.

The milestone passenger Andrei arrived in the capital of Belarus on German airline Lufthansa from Frankfurt. On arrival, he was welcomed in the VIP-terminal with flowers and gifts. He admitted that arriving as a 5-millionth passenger was a surprise for him as he had never won anything before. He flies out of the Minsk airport quite often, mainly because of work. He visits Frankfurt about 5 to 6 times a year. “I like Minsk National Airport: it is big, cozy, quite comfortable,” Andrei said.

Director General of Minsk National Airport Dmitry Melikyan believes that in 2020 the airport will be able to not only repeat the current passenger traffic record but also beat it. “Since 2005, we have not had a fall in passenger numbers. We have been growing all the time. When world civil aviation was experiencing a decline of about 8%, we had a small but still a growth of 1.5%,” Dmitry Melikyan said.

“This is a very important event for the airport and the aviation industry as a whole. It means that the airport is entering the category of 5 to 10 million passengers a year,” said Artem Sikorsky, director of the Aviation Department at the Transport Ministry.

Minsk National Airport is Belarus' first international airport that has been certified for compliance with the international standard ISO 9001. The airport offers flights to over 40 destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and other regions. In 2018, Minsk National Airport handled 4,536,618 passengers, which was up 10.3% over 2017.
