MINSK, 9 November (BelTA) – About 95% of the Minsk Oblast schools have an Internet access, BelTA learnt from chief expert of the education department of the Minsk City Council Nelli Khmelnitskaya. In her words, every educational establishment in the oblast has computer classrooms. The region has achieved a considerable progress in the informatization of educational institutions. Today’s standards envisage one computer per 12 school students (16 college students), while in 2005 this figure accounted for one computer per thirty students (16). Five years ago only 30% of schools had an Internet access, and in most cases only one computer in school was connected to the world wide web. “The education institutions of the Minsk Oblast are aggressively applying new technologies. The Education Ministry has been purchasing new computers to increase the number of computer classrooms in big schools. Work is underway to develop local networks, and to provide broadband Internet access. The region has been acquiring specialized library and educational programs, interactive boards, multimedia installations and other things,” said Nelli Khmelnitskaya. As positive examples she cited gymnasium No 1 in the town of Dzerzhinsk, and Nesvizh lyceum which are now computer savvy. Information technologies have allowed improving the quality of education. Now school students have an opportunity to communicate with peers from other schools including from abroad. In Minsk Oblast there are 636 secondary schools, 23 vocational schools, and two specialized educational establishments. БЕЛТА
