MINSK, 20 June (BelTA) – The first regional contest of weaving and belt plaiting, Belarusian Belt, will take place in Uzda District, Minsk Oblast, on 26 June, the head of the traditional art department of the Minsk Oblast folk arts center Vitaly Kasperovich told BelTA. Partaking in the contest will be 100 people from 16 districts of Minsk Oblast. They will make belts using various traditional techniques. The event will be held in two rounds. Contestants will present the ready-made belts and compete in the speed and quality of belt plaiting. The jury will define the best home-made collections and plaited belts. The jury will also honor artists for the continuity of local traditions, creative thinking and innovative approach. Moreover, special prizes will be presented to the youngest participant and the most cretaive family. The prize winners will be awarded valuable gifts. Five of the best works will be donated to the Ivenets Museum of Folk Art. The art of belt plaiting is one of the most important types of modern folk art in Belarus. In ancient times it was an obligatory part of the national costume of Belarusians. It was worn by both men and women, and children. In traditional culture, it served several important functions. In the first place, it secured clothing at the waistline. Secondly, it was used as a talisman, and as a sign that distinguished an individual in a social setting. The belt played a big role in the folk rites. In today's Belarus, belts are garnering increasing attention as an object of art. With the gradual revival of production zones it has become one of the most popular and common crafts in Minsk Oblast. The region has more than 60 artists, most of which pass their skills to the younger generation in sessions at arts and crafts centers. The Belarusian Belt regional festival will be held every three years. Its goal is to promote the revival and preservation of national traditions of weaving and plaiting belts, search for new forms of products, motives and methods of craft, support craftsmen, involve children and youth in this art, promote exchange of experience among artisans.
