MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – Belarus’ delegation led by Ambassador of Belarus in Austria, Permanent Representative of Belarus in Vienna Valery Voronetsky took part in the IAEA-sponsored forum on the Experience of Possible Relevance to the Creation of Nuclear Weapon Free Zones (NWFZ). The forum was held in the IAEA headquarters in Vienna on 21-22 November, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. Belarus expressed eagerness to support global efforts to create nuclear weapon free zones in the Middle East. Moreover, it is essential to take into account the interests of all parties and the development of the situation in the region. Belarus’ delegation drew attention to the interdependence of peaceful settlement processes and the creation of nuclear weapon free zones in the Middle East. It is noteworthy that these processes may be carried out simultaneously. Belarus’ position is based on the need to reduce the importance of nuclear weapons in national security. In early 1990s Belarus refused to possess nuclear weapons. This step has become a great contribution to national, regional and international security. Partaking in the forum were members of the IAEA Directorate, representatives of diplomatic missions and foreign ministries of the IAEA member states. The conference included reports of representatives of nuclear weapons free zones in Latin America, Africa, South East Asia, the Pacific region, Central Asia, the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials. (ABACC), the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). Representatives of Middle Eastern countries and other states took part in the interactive discussion. БЕЛТА
