MINSK, 13 January (BelTA) – Belarusian mass media need a memorandum on protection of family and family values, member of the Presidium of the Belarusian Union of Women, editor-in-chief of Alesya women’s magazine Tamara Bunto told a press conference dedicated to abortions on 12 January, BelTA has learnt. Tamara Bunto noted that such a document is already in effect in Russia and is relevant for Belarus, “I think this should be initiated and done in our country, too, because we, journalists, shape attitudes”. In her view, mass media encourages people to live their lives selfishly. This results in a low birth rate. “They inculcate sheer selfishness. You should love yourself. You are the only one you have. I am the only one I have. These cliches travel from magazine to magazine”. The editor-in-chief of the women’s magazine added that she has recently read an article in a Belarusian newspaper about the things that a real woman should accomplish. “To get a higher education or even two, learn a foreign language, learn to drive, get married and divorced, spend a tempestuous night with a stranger in a hotel, on a trip, on hiking tour… Something like that. This was written in a normal newspaper, not a tabloid,” Tamara Bunto said. As an alternative, Tamara Bunto suggests that mass media should establish wives and mothers, not lovers, as role models. In her view, mass media should shape a positive attitude to family values and childbirth in young women. Besides, mass media should publish more articles related to morals and spirituality, she added. БЕЛТА
