Belarus, Mozambique sign memorandum of understanding

25.04.2014

Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei andMinister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique Oldemiro Baloi signed a memorandum of understanding between the Foreign Ministry of Belarus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique in Minsk on 25 April, BelTA has learnt. Speaking after the signing ceremony, Vladimir Makei stressed that the talks with his Mozambican counterpart were constructive and fruitful. In his words, it is the first high-level visit of Mozambican representatives to Belarus. Belarus, as part of the USSR, cooperated with Mozambique. The contacts were vibrant. The Belarusian Foreign Minister stated that he and his counterpart discussed further steps in the development of the legal framework for the bilateral cooperation. “Several more agreements will be prepared in the near future,” the Foreign Minister of Belarus said. He stressed that the documents could be signed during his return visit to Mozambique. Vladimir Makei also emphasized that Belarus views Mozambique as an important partner in the African region. The parties agreed on the necessity to set up a mixed commission on trade and economic cooperation. It is expected that agriculture and industry will be the priorities in the bilateral cooperation. The Belarusian minister added that a trading show of Belarusian equipment operates in the capital of Mozambique. There are also prospects to develop cooperation in education. Oldemiro Baloi for his part thanked Belarus for warm reception. Recalling on the contacts Mozambique had with the USSR, the minister said: “You supported our fight for independence and assisted consolidation inside the country.” The Mozambican minister also believes that “the two countries should raise the economic contacts to a level of political relations.” The minister said he had visited the Minsk Tractor Works and stressed that the two countries have cooperation prospects in the agricultural sector. The head of the Mozambican delegation believes that the bilateral cooperation plan should be filled with concrete projects and deadlines for their implementation as soon as possible. He expressed hope for a return visit of a Belarusian delegation led by Vladimir Makei or even a higher-level visit to Mozambique in the near future.
