Belarus in favor of cooperation across Eurasian space

16.06.2014

As far as the construction of the Eurasian Economic Union is concerned, Belarus is in favor of tighter cooperation in the Eurasian space instead of creating more dividing lines. The statement was made by Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei after negotiations with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Vladimir Makei said that Belarus would like European partners not to make the country choose between the future Eurasian Economic Union and European integration processes. The official said: “We live in the common space. Our task is to enable cooperation with each other instead of making dividing lines,” stressed the Belarusian Foreign Minister. “It is important to develop integration processes in the post-Soviet space in the future. In the more distant future we would like to bring the two unions that exist in the common Eurasian economic space closer”. Vladimir Makei said he was absolutely optimistic about prospects of the Eurasian Economic Union. “We believe that the signing of the treaty on setting up the Eurasian Economic Union is a step to develop integration processes in the post-Soviet space,” he said. “We consider it an important measure to strengthen integration processes. It is another thing that participants of the process may not be entirely pleased with the end results at the present stage”. Vladimir Makei also underlined: “We believe that the content and the form of the present treaty do not entirely correspond to the goals that were declared earlier. But anyway the treaty represents quite a positive step to further bolster cooperation between the three countries”. The Belarusian Foreign Minister remarked that everything that had not been resolved in the trilateral format has been absolutely calmly resolved in the bilateral format. “It means that the integration process goes ahead. We talked about it a lot during the meeting with Sergei Lavrov,” said Vladimir Makei.
