Belarus ready to supply machinery to build Nicaragua Canal

30.06.2014

Belarus is interested in supplying machinery for the construction of the Nicaragua Interoceanic Grand Canal that would connect the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, Belarus' Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei told the Belarus 1 TV channel summing up the results of his recent visit to this Latin American country, BelTA has learnt. “Nicaragua has started implementing this ambitious and very interesting project to construct the interoceanic canal between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. This project is of great interest to us because we could ship heavy-duty BelAZ dump trucks, MAZ trucks and road construction machinery there,” the Belarusian Foreign Minister said.  Apart from that, Belarus and Nicaragua might cooperate in the agribusiness sector. “Only 1 million out of 5 million hectares of land suitable for farming is now used in Nicaragua. I believe that we have huge cooperation prospects in this field. Our specialists, agricultural scientists, farm machinery producers might come in handy,” Vladimir Makei said.  He noted that Nicaragua has known about Belarus since the Soviet times. This country “is showing a vivid interest in cooperating with Belarus,” he added.  Speaking about cooperation with Ecuador, the Foreign Minister noted: “I think that we have great opportunities to ramp up the bilateral cooperation. During the talks we discussed supplies of Belarusian machines. Top on the agenda is the signing of another set of agreements related to avoidance of double taxation and mutual protection of investments.” This will allow the two countries to considerably improve the legal framework of the bilateral cooperation and intensify contacts in all the fields. Vladimir Makei reminded that Belarus and Ecuador are already cooperating in the petrochemical industry and seismic prospecting.
