Belarus' pig population to increase by more than 10% in 2015

12.07.2014

The pig population in Belarus will be raised by 320,000-330,000 in 2015, Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats told reporters on 11 July, BelTA has learned. At present the pig population in Belarus is 2.7 million. More than 2 million pigs are bred at 98 pig breeding farms. In 2015 there are plans to open 15 pig breeding farms which are currently being built. Therefore, the pig population will be increased by 320,000-330,000 (11.1%), the minister said. BelTA reported earlier that during the working trip to Minsk Oblast on 27 May the head of state gave an instruction to restore the pig stock to the level which existed in Belarus before the outbreak of the African swine fever (ASF) by the end of 2014 or Q1 2015. “The President gave an instruction to restore the pig breeding farms which suffered great losses due to the ASF and open them by the end of the year,” Leonid Zayats stressed. In his words, the work in underway.
