Lukashenko urges to minimize impact of heat and drought on crops

05.08.2014

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko gave an instruction to use all available tools to minimize the influence of anomalous heat and drought on agricultural crops. The head of state made the statement at a meeting held on 5 August to discuss measures to ensure fire safety of forests, farmland and peat bogs, BelTA has learned. “The talks that we will not gather vegetables because of drought must be avoided. Belarus can cope with the watering of lands used for growing vegetables. It is not grain which is cultivated on millions of hectares. It is all about organization,” the Belarusian leader emphasized. At the meeting Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats told the President that the soil humidity has fallen because of the heat and absence of precipitation. This, first of all, has a negative impact on vegetable crops. Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that there is not enough equipment for the watering of fields. Speaking about animal husbandry, the President warned agrarians against wasting time. “The main thing is to feed and water cattle. Do not waste this productive period. If we waste time, we will lose products,” he said. The session also focused on the progress in the harvesting campaign. Governors informed the President about the progress in rural areas. Alexander Lukashenko stressed that by the end of the week it is necessary to finish grain harvesting in the whole country, except for Vitebsk Oblast and northern parts of Minsk Oblast.
