Belarus' grain harvest exceeds 8 million tonnes

08.08.2014

Belarusian agrarians have already harvested eight million tonnes of grain. Thus, they are just one step from the record-high harvest, BelTA learnt from the Agriculture and Food Ministry.
As was reported, this year the country plans to harvest more than 9 million tonnes of grain (it is almost 2 million tonnes more than last year). As of 8 August, the total harvest in the country exceeded 8.165 million tonnes of grain, about 85% of the areas under crops. By 8 August 2013 the country cropped only 5.040 million tonnes of grain.
Minsk Oblast is currently leading with 1.966 million tonnes of grain cut. Taking into account that about 12% of the area is still to be harvested, the central oblast will reach this year's target of 1 million tonnes of grain. Grodno Oblast has so far cropped almost 1.5 million (more than 86%). The oblast has already set a new personal record: the maximally high crop in the oblast reached 1.2 million tonnes of grain in 1992.
Brest, Mogilev and Gomel Oblasts almost keep the same level. The oblasts have so far harvested 1.355, 1.276 and 1.246 million tonnes respectively. Vitebsk Oblast has cropped a bit more than 838,000 tonnes of grain.
The oblast was the last to start the harvesting campaign, with 62% of its areas cropped so far.
According to the Agriculture and Food Ministry, all the oblasts have showed higher yields this year. The average grain yield in Belarus is 39.7 centers per hectare, which is 6.2 centners higher than in the previous year. According to Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats, such high results should become regular.
One week remains to complete harvesting. The Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus has set forth 15 August as a deadline.
