Guminsky: Belarus, Malaysia have great potential to expand cooperation

19.08.2014

Belarus and Malaysia have great potential for the development of bilateral cooperation, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Viktor Guminsky said before a meeting with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia Ronald Kiandee, BelTA has learned. “We have a large untapped potential in various areas to promote the inter-parliamentary, trade and economic cooperation and to develop the legal framework. There is an interest in the educational area, for example, the training of healthcare personnel for Malaysia,” said Viktor Guminsky. "In spite of the distance, we have good trade and economic relations. We have met with representatives of Malaysia as part of various international forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union. But for the time being, this is the first visit of such high to our country on the part of Malaysia,” said the Vice Speaker. He also noted that in 2013 the trade between Belarus and Malaysia amounted to more than $163 million. Viktor Guminsky stated that it is much more than with the countries that are geographically close to Belarus. At the meeting with the Malaysian counterpart Viktor Guminsky also noted that Belarusian citizens can enter Malaysia without a visa. However, no such regime has been enacted on the part of Belarus. A corresponding agreement needs to be signed for that. In general, he suggested that the two countries should establish and develop the legal framework of bilateral cooperation. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia Ronald Kiandee noted that the Malaysian delegation that comprised five MPs came to Belarus to learn more about the country. In his words, the visit will expand and improve the bilateral relations, including parliamentary cooperation. He added that the two countries enjoy good trade relations. Malaysia exports furniture and rubber to Belarus, while Belarus sells its potash fertilizers to the country. In his words, the countries could cooperate in other areas as well. Mr Ronald Kiandee also stressed that the states had not organized the visits of the kind before. At the meeting with Viktor Guminsky, the Malaysian official invited Belarusian representatives to visit Malaysia.
