Belarus to set up tractor assembly plant in Nigeria

10.09.2014

Belarus will set up a plant to assemble tractors in Nigeria, Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei told a press conference in Abuja on 9 September, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.
“It was noted at the meeting with businessmen that you have 70 million hectares of agricultural lands and you (Nigeria – BelTA's note) need equipment to cultivate it. We are ready to help, set up a joint assembly plant. You will be direct cofounders of this company. I think Nigeria will benefit from it. At the same time we understand that if we produce this equipment in Nigeria, we will be able to sell it on the Nigerian market and across the region in general in the future,” the minister said.
According to Vladimir Makei, all necessary documents have already been signed. “We hope that the plant will be commissioned at the yearend. As for the overall production under the project, I think if needed we will be able to expand the production capacity of our joint assembly plant. It will depend on concrete agreements between Minsk Tractor Works and our Nigerian partners. We are ready to provide you with all necessary assistance in the area,” he said.
According to Vladimir Makei, Belarus also plans to export MAZ trucks to Nigeria and join the Nigerian governmental program on industrial development. “We produce tractors, truck-tractors, trucks, rock haulers, agricultural equipment. We have enough experience in high technology. Thus, we produce a great deal of products which Nigeria needs,” the minister noted.
