Belarus suspends cattle imports from Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina

23.09.2014

Belarus has restricted the imports of cattle from Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Veterinary and Food Control Department of the Agriculture and Food Ministry.
The World Organization for Animal Health reported on the cases of catarrhal fever among susceptible ruminants in Peloponnese, Western Greece and Ionia, Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus and Western Macedonia as well as in Banja Luka of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In this regard Belarus has introduced temporary restrictions on the import of pedigree, commercial and slaughter cattle, sheep and goats, sperm and embryos of the abovementioned animals, wild, zoo and circus susceptible animals, camels and other camel-like mammals.
All the previously issued permits to import the above-mentioned products from Peloponnese, Western Greece and Ionia, Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus and Western Macedonia as well as in Banja Luka of Bosnia and Herzegovina are cancelled.
Bluetongue (catarrhal fever) is a non-contagious, insect-borne, viral disease of ruminants, mainly sheep and less frequently cattle, goats, buffalo, deer, dromedaries and antelope. It is caused by the Bluetongue virus (BTV). Major signs are high fever, excessive salivation, swelling of the face and tongue and cyanosis of the tongue. BTV causes an acute disease with high morbidity and mortality.
