Sivak: Belarus, Latvia need to increase mutual investments in logistics

10.10.2014

The transport companies of Belarus and Latvia need to work on increasing mutual investments in the transport and logistics sector, Belarusian Transport and Communications Minister Anatoly Sivak told reporters after the roundtable "Belarusian-Latvian cooperation in the field of transport logistics,” BelTA has learned.
On 9 October Minsk hosted the roundtable during which the parties signed three documents on cooperation, including the memorandum of understanding between the Transport Ministry of Belarus and Latvian State Roads, the memorandum of cooperation between the Association of International Freight Forwarders and Logistics "BAME" (Belarus) and the Latvian Logistics Association, and an agreement on cooperation between the Association of International Road Carriers BAMAP (Belarus) and the Association of Road Carriers Latvijas Auto (Latvia).
"The parties need to promote cooperation not only between the associations but also to work to increase the mutual investments in the transport and logistics sector. This is the key to success of our transport corridor," said Anatoly Sivak. He stressed that today's signing of the documents was "a clear confirmation of the synchronous actions of the government bodies and business".
The minister noted that the fruitful cooperation in rail and road transport, joint development of transport infrastructure and logistics, ensuring an enabling environment for transit through the territories of the two countries are the tools that help the transport industries of Belarus and Latvia to move towards progress and development. "We see that this form of dialogue (with the assistance of transport, logistics, stevedoring companies and cargo owners) is useful and effective," he said.
For his part, Latvian Communications Minister Anrijs Matiss invited the Belarusian side to make full use of Latvian seaports for the transportation of export/import cargoes and processing of these goods. According to him, the status of the ports as free ports allows creating joint ventures in which the Latvian side is interested. “We have concrete proposals for the Belarusian side and we see good prospects of cooperation. Joint investment and joint ventures will be a new step, which will contribute to the growth in the number of joint projects,” said the head of the transport agency of Latvia.
The roundtable in Minsk discussed the cooperation in the field of road transport, port services, railway freight transport and measures to increase the attractiveness of transit to the Latvian seaports.
