Over 70% of Belarusians ready to take part in forthcoming presidential election

30.06.2015

In line with the opinion poll conducted by the BSU Center of Social and Political Research, over 70% of Belarusian citizens are ready to take part in the forthcoming presidential election, director of the center David Rotman said in an interview with the Main Air program on 28 June, BelTA has learned. “This is a rather relative figure, but over 70% of people are ready to take part in the election. Most likely it will be so. This is a rather high percentage at the moment. It may increase in the future. We can make rather accurate forecasts even today,” the sociologist said. He noted that respondents gave different assessments of the government and the opposition. We calculate this in the interval from minus one to plus one. The level of trust to the government is about plus 0.5, the level of trust to the opposition is minus 0.5. So, the difference is very big,” David Rotman said. In his words, the situation in Ukraine has an impact on the enhancement of trust to the ruling authority. “It is clear because our country does its best to help Ukrainians overcome these difficult situations. It is very good,” the sociologist stressed. David Rotman said that during the opinion poll the respondents were asked what they will do if the situation in the country worsens. When answering this question, Belarusians demonstrated a sensible approach to the resolution of various issues. Nearly a half of respondents said that they will solve problems themselves, slightly less then a half said that they will wait till the situation improves. “It means that our people are not and will not be aggressive, there will be no color revolutions in the country,” David Rotman said. In spite of the difficulties, Belarusians are optimistic. According to the sociologist, people say that the life is rather good now.
