Belarus has won in the Agro Tourism nomination of the National Geographic Traveler Awards 2016, BelTA has learned.
Belarus earned 24% of votes ahead of Italy (22%) and France (20%). Russia claimed 18% of votes, while Georgia took 9%.
Belarus also made the list of top five health-improvement destinations, alongside with Israel (top of the chart), the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia.
The online voting was conducted by the National Geographic Russia magazine in 23 nominations in a span of almost two months. Spain was named the best country in the Beach Leisure category. Bulgaria scooped the first place in the Family Vacation nomination. The National Geographic readers named Italy as the leader in Excursions, Austria as second to none in Ski Holiday, and India as the best destination in Adventure Vacations. Sweden was picked as the best place for Eco Tourism lovers. Georgia was named the Discovery of the Year.
Agro tourism is one of the best developing types of tourism in Belarus. There are 2,262 farmsteads in the country. Their number has soared 66 times since 2006. An estimated 294,300 tourists made use of Belarus' agro tourism services in 2015. Last year Belarus placed second in the Agro Tourism category, only behind Italy.
