Belarusian oil refineries on the fence about Russian Railways discounts

06.03.2017

Efforts of Russian Railways alone will not be sufficient for redirecting the flow of transit oil products

Efforts of Russian Railways alone will not be sufficient for redirecting the flow of transit oil products. Belarusian Transport and Communications Minister Anatoly Sivak made the statement during the press conference held in BelTA's press center on 6 March in response to Russian Railways' decision to offer even lower prices for transit oil products.
Anatoly Sivak explained that it is up to Belarusian companies, which need their cargoes moved, to decide whether they want to grab the discounts the Russian Railways offers or not. “They are not changing their delivery routes for now. This is why one can conclude that efforts of Russian Railways alone are not enough to redirect the freight flow,” he stressed.
The official noted that it is also necessary to take into equation the cost of port services and the distance of transportation by sea from different ports.
Anatoly Sivak pointed out that as far as export and import transportation is concerned, Belarusian Railways has no preferred directions. “Transport companies don't try to influence the directions for moving export cargoes. At least we don't make such proposals,” he concluded.
BelTA reported earlier that in early March Russian Railways increased the discount on transporting Belarusian oil products to Russian ports on the Baltic Sea shore from 25% to 50%.
