Lukashenka: we will build the safest nuclear power plant

06.07.2017

The safest nuclear power plant will be built in Belarus with strict observance of IAEA norms and standards. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated this today at a meeting dedicated to the inauguration of the 26th annual session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, BelTA. "I did not plan to dwell on the topic of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in detail, but one of the draft decisions submitted for your consideration suggested" deep concern "about the way we build the nuclear power plant, since the reason has triumphed and this decision was not approved, Head of state. "" But I wanted to ask one question here to those who raise this issue: are we the only country that builds a nuclear power plant? No. We, do we possess dozens of energy atomic blocks? No! ". "I guarantee you, the Europeans, despite the fact that we are not the only country that deals with the peaceful atom: we will build the safest station." After the Chernobyl disaster, it was not so easy for us to make this decision, and we understand today that the main issue - Security, etc. What concerns the Europeans and our neighbors, we intend to finish the construction of this station on time with strict observance of the norms and standards of the IAEA, "the Belarusian leader said. Alexander Lukashenko also informed that after the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania, Belarus invited willing Lithuanian citizens to work for BelAES. "And many Lithuanians, specialists, atomic scientists, came to work for us," he said. According to the President, the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be an entrance to a new technological level, this is also important for increasing the state's energy independence. The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built according to the Russian NPP-2006 project, 18 km from Ostrovets (Grodno region). It will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1,200 MW each. The first power unit is planned to be commissioned in 2019, the second - in 2020.
