Lukashenko awards President's Cup to Belarusian Extraleague winner

26.04.2022

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko took part in a ceremony to award the winners of the 30th Belarusian Extraleague Ice Hockey Championship 2021-2022 on 25 April, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian Extraleague final between HC Yunost Minsk and HC Metallurg Zhlobin was held in Minsk Arena. HC Metallurg won the final series 3-0.

Aleksandr Lukashenko, who attended the game, handed the tournament's trophy, the President's Cup, to the hockey players of Zhlobin. The captain of HC Yunost Minsk received a commemorative prize for second place from the head of state as well.

“Dear friends, I think I will express the opinion of all our players standing here as well as our coaches if I thank the organizers of today's match and our spectators. More than 15,000 people came to see the game and it is always speaks a lot. From my point of view, the result of today's match is the following: there are winners, but no losers,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The president said that he closely watched the final series of the championship. “You did really well. You gave yourselves completely to this game. You have given the Belarusian people and the fans who came here today, including me, a wonderful game. A truly man's game. A real hockey,” the head of state said.

Metallurg reached the Extraleague final and claimed the champion title for the second time in its history. Zhlobin first won the tournament 10 years ago.

The fate of this year's Extraleague gold medal was decided in the seventh game. The fans of the Belarusian ice hockey championship had not seen such a long series for 12 years. Before that had happened only twice, and both times with the participation of HC Yunost Minsk: Minsk beat Gomel in 2009, and Shakhtyor in 2010.
