Belarus launches barley exports via commodity exchange

24.09.2026

The first exchange transaction for the sale of feed barley for export has been concluded on the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE), BelTA learned from the BUCE press service.

The seller was a domestic producer of feed and feed additives, and the buyer was a Russian company specializing in wholesale trade in grain, seeds and animal feed. The volume of the exchange contract amounted to 6,000 tonnes, worth the equivalent of $734,000. This transaction became not only the first experience of selling barley abroad through the exchange platform, but also the largest transaction within the framework of a new area of exchange trading oriented towards external markets.

«Regular trading sessions for the sale of grain crops, groats and flour for export have been held since May 2026 with the aim of expanding the range of goods supplied abroad using the exchange mechanism. Today, wheat and rye flour, buckwheat, millet and barley are sold at the auctions. Leading domestic producers of these products take part in the trading sessions as sellers. As for buyers, these are mainly companies resident in the Russian Federation, predominantly from Moscow Oblast, Leningrad Oblast and Smolensk Oblast. This area of exchange trading is still fairly young, so sales volumes are still small and the circle of regular buyers has only just begun to form. At the same time, the export sales figure for September has already exceeded the results of the previous four months by four and a half times. So the prospects for development are very broad: additional commodity items, new sales markets and an increase in the number of participants,» the BUCE press service said.

Based on the results of the eight months of 2026, exchange exports of agro-industrial products grew 1.4-fold, to $1.2 billion. The largest amounts of transactions were in dry milk, butter, meat products and flax fiber.

The public joint-stock company (OAO) Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange was established in 2004. The first trading session was conducted in June 2005. BUCE is one of the largest mercantile exchanges in Eastern Europe. Its key function is to assist Belarusian companies with exporting their products and assist foreign companies with entering the Belarusian market. The commodity exchange facilitates trade in metals, timber, agricultural products, and a broad choice of industrial and consumer goods.
