Decree No 1117 of the Council of Ministers adopted the national programme on mitigation of climate change for 2008-2012.
The programme is developed in line with the national plan of action on the resource management and environment protection of the Republic of Belarus for 2006-2010. The document stipulates for the improvement of the regulatory framework and the system of information support and personnel training, the expansion of scientific knowledge, the fulfillment of international commitments on climate and the international cooperation in the area of environment protection.
The core element of the programme is the development of precautionary measures to prevent the serious damage that can hurt the climate- dependable sectors of the Belarusian economy. National and foreign investment is to be attracted to implement the environment protection projects, in particular the ones related to ecologically friendly technologies (with low or no emission) and the renewable energy sources.
The experts believe that the implementation of the programme will help improve the ecological situation in the urban and rural areas of the country, get the highest economic efficiency possible from using natural resources, establish a reliable database of the climate change projections and secure the access to this information.
