MINSK, March 19 (BelTA) - Big industrial companies of Belarus will support Earth Hour 2009 campaign, BelTA learnt from Natalia Porechina, head of the working group “Belarus and Climate”. On March 28, during the campaign, organized by the World Wildlife Fund, around 1 billion people from 1000 biggest cities from all over the planet will turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour (from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, local time) to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. In Belarus, taking part in the campaign will be big industrial companies including the Minsk Motor Works, Grodno Azot, Kommunarka, Amkodor, Pinskdrev, Bobruiskmebel, Medtehnika and others. The campaign will be also supported by the energy efficiency department of the Belarus State Standardization Committee, the Forestry Ministry, the Ministry of Architecture and Construction, the Economy Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Trade Ministry, the State Committee for Science and Technology, the State Border Committee. “We are sure that it is not the final list of the participants. Dozens of Belarusian companies and thousands of people will take part in the event. We proposed colourful posters to all the organizations which would like to take part in the event in order to inform their personnel and clients about Earth Hour 2009,” Natalia Porechina noted. The list of the participants of the forthcoming Earth Hour 2009 is growing every day. It includes such cities as Moscow, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Las Vegas, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Manila, Mexico, Oslo, Singapore, Sidney, Toronto, Warsaw and others. Iconic landmarks all around the world turned off their non-essential lighting for Earth Hour which included the Empire State Building (New York City), Sears Tower (Chicago), Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco), Bank of America Plaza (Atlanta), Sydney Opera House (Sydney, Australia), Wat Arun Buddhist Temple (Bangkok, Thailand), the Colosseum (Rome, Italy), Royal Castle (Stockholm, Sweden), London's City Hall (England), Space Needle (Seattle), and the CN Tower (Toronto, Canada).
