MINSK, May 6 (BelTA) – Belarus is a priority country for the International Finance Corporation in Central and Eastern Europe as far as investments and consultative services are concerned. With this in mind the IFC intends to increase investments into the Belarusian economy in the future, World Bank Group representative in Belarus Craig Bell told media in Minsk on May 6. As of January 2008 IFC investments in Belarus stood at $185 million. “It is not much. We could have given more,” said Craig Bell. “Belarus is a priority country in the region for the IFC as far as investments are concerned. We are intent on giving more”. The IFC investment portfolio contains several potential project investments for Belarus, which have advanced to different phases. The World Bank representative did not specify the amount of investments and the number of projects. He mentioned they are in negotiations with private companies and information about these negotiations cannot be disclosed before investment agreements are signed. About half of the projects in the investment portfolio for Belarus have a substantial energy-effectiveness component. Craig Bell did not specify in what economic branches most projects meant to improve energy effectiveness of manufacturing processes will be implemented. The International Finance Corporation is a member of the World Bank. It works to promote sustainable economic development of private business.
