MINSK, 6 August (BelTA) – The overall crime rate has been declining in Belarus in the recent years, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting to discuss the work of the Prosecutor’s Office. In H1 2009, the registered number of crimes was down 9.5% over the same period last year, of them the number of felonies dropped 8.5%, and violent crimes 12% .The intentional homicide rate declined 24%. The incidence of grave bodily injuries, robbery, plundering and vandalism significantly decreased, too. However, crime detection rate remains a matter of serious concern, the President underlined. Almost 42% of crimes committed in H1 2009 remain unsolved, including over 24% of felonies and violent crimes. Recidivism rate is rather high; embezzlement and misfeasance, bribery and forgery are on the rise. Prosecution agencies have to cope with extra demands pressed by the ongoing transition to liberalization and privatization when securing legal order comes to the forefront. It is the prosecutor's office that should coordinate all the law enforcement bodies and lead a more successful fight against crime and corruption, and safeguard legal rights and interests of the citizens. The President believes that significant and systematic flaws in the law enforcement system are absolutely unacceptable. So if these flaws are revealed, they should be immediately removed. Alexander Lukashenko reminded that a decision was taken to carry out a comprehensive inspection of the prosecution agencies with a view to improving the efficiency of their work. The President urged all the attendees to openly discuss the issues surrounding the work of the prosecution agencies and offer constructive suggestions to solve the existing problems. БЕЛТА
