MINSK, 9 July (BelTA) – Belarus will go its own way and pursue a sovereign policy, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule in Minsk on 9 July. Alexander Lukashenko thanked Stefan Fule for visiting Belarus. “Considering your conviction and bias towards Belarus I think it is good that you will see the country with your eyes. It is important that you see by yourself the processes that are going now in Belarus,” he said. The President of Belarus said he hopes for an absolutely sincere talk. “I think we have something to discuss. We need to hear out what the other side has to say and try to understand,” he said. According to Alexander Lukashenko, the problems in the Belarus- EU relations are well known. “I can say it openly that in contrast to many officials I harbor no hopes. I am well aware that you will wait, I just do not know why, until the presidential elections are over. I am doing my best to try to understand the European Union, Americans and now the Russians in this respect. On the one hand, this is a right and objective way: both you and the others would like to know who they will be dealing with in the future, who will be the President in Belarus. On the other hand, I simply want to caution you against extra hopes and big expectations: Belarus will go its own way, at all costs. Like your country (Czechia –BelTA’s note) who once took the course of independence, searched for friends who would help ensure the independence and provide assistance. We will act exactly the same way to ensure our independence. I would like you to understand that we will not fail, we will not kneel before anyone – either you (the EU – BelTA’s note), Russia or America,” the Belarusian President said. The Belarusian leader urged to abandon double standards in the relations and get focused on the main issues of mutual interest. “This is our sovereignty and security, this is independence of our Belarus. For independence we will do everything. We will not be running around Europe, America and Russia, borrowing money, playing to Russia’s tune and vice versa as does our Belarusian opposition, which is so much liked in Europe by some policymakers. We will not do that,” he said. “I would like to have an honest and sincere talk,” Alexander Lukashenko said. БЕЛТА
