MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) – Belarus supports the efforts of the international community to abolish nuclear weapons, Ivan Grinevich, adviser for arms control and international security of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus, told a press conference on 27 August, BelTA has learnt. “Belarus supports the efforts of the international community to promote the abolition, non-proliferation and elimination of nuclear weapons,” Ivan Grinevich said. He reminded that Belarus joined the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty as early as in the last century. Our country also upholds the enforcement of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. “Belarus has signed the document and the parliament of our country has ratified it,” Ivan Grinevich said. Belarus welcomes the statement by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urging the international community to scale up efforts to promote nuclear non-proliferation and elimination of nuclear weapons. Although the international community is doing a lot to ban nuclear tests, more efforts are still needed. It is necessary to get down to developing a treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons as soon as possible. Apart from that, it is necessary to accelerate the enactment of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and give an added impetus to the implementation of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. “Various initiatives, including that of Kazakhstan, might put a new life into the nuclear disarmament efforts,” Ivan Grinevich underlined. He added that in order to make the nuclear disarmament process non-reversible, the society, politicians and scientists need to realize the threats posed by nuclear weapons. БЕЛТА
